Step One – Brand Strategy & Design
What is brand strategy?
Picture two founders selling almost the same thing, with the same values, to the same customers.
The first is working hard to win over every single person. The first thing is people see – website, packaging, social media, shop front – it looks fine, but doesn’t say much on its own. People have to be talked into it, one at a time, from scratch.
The second barely has to convince anyone. Every first encounter says who they are, what they stand for, and why they are different, before a single word is even exchanged. Every interaction is already close to the finish before they even start because people arrive already on side.
The difference isn’t what they sell. It’s the brand.
Brand strategy is the thinking that happens before any of that. It’s discovering what you stand for, how you help, who you are for, and how you sound, so every decision after that already knows what to say. Without it, you’re making those decisions one at a time, from scratch, which is exhausting, and can just never be consistent as you flip flop between messages trying to find one that lands.
Brand design is what that thinking looks like. Your visual identity. The visual and verbal world people recognise you by, wherever they meet you.
One without the other doesn’t work. Strategy without design stays invisible – a great idea that nobody sees. Design without strategy is just decoration – it might look good, but it’s not saying anything true or consistent about you. It’s just a nice logo and a pretty colour palette.
Together, they mean you stop starting from zero every time. Your brand does some of the convincing before you even show up, which makes running your business so much easier, far less exhausting, and you can get on with why you started your business in the first place.
